Sholay is considered as one of the best Indian classic films and one of the “Top 10 Indian Films” of all time in the British Film Institute’s 2002 poll. In 50th Annual Filmfare Awards in 2005 it was named the Best Film of 50 Years. Made in 1975 the action-adventure film was directed by Ramesh Sippy and produced by his father G.P. Sippy. The star cast in the film were Dharmendra as Veeru, Amitabh Bachchan as Jai, Sanjiv Kumar as a retired police officer and Amjad Khan as Gabbar Singh, a ruthless dacoit. Hema Malini and Jaya Bhaduri were playing love interest of Jai and Veeru. The shooting of the Sholay film was done in the rocky terrain of Ramanagara, in the southern state of Karnataka.

It took two and a half years to complete it. The censor board has removed several violent scenes from the sholay movie and reduced the length to 198 minutes from the original 204 minutes.

Interesting Facts about Indian Classic Film Sholay (1975)

The full length Sholay movie was later become available on home media. Sholay got negative critical reviews in the beginning but later with the publicity of word of mouth it became super hit and considered to be the highest grossing Indian film of all time. It broke all records for continuously running shows in many theatres all over India and in Minerva Theatre in Mumbai it ran for more than five years. The plot of the film is that in a small village of Ramgarh, a retired police officer Thakur Baldev Singh lives and he sends for a pair of small time thieves he had once arrested to help him capture Gabbar Singh, a wanted dacoit for a reward of Rs. 50000/-. Thakur asks them to bring Gabbar Singh alive and he would give Rs.20000/- as an additional reward.

When the next time dacoits sent by Gabbar, tries to extort money from villagers the duo thrashes them. Soon Gabbar and his dacoits attack village on Holi, they had a tough battle and the two thieves get cornered but Thakur did not help even when a gun was lying within his reach. Then Thakur explains the atrocities of Gabbar who killed all his family and cut-off his both arms a few years back.

He uses a shawl to hide them. While living in Ramgarh Veeru falls in love with Basanti (Hema Malini) who earns her living by driving a horse-cart and Jai falls for Radha (Jaya Bhaduri), thakur’s widowed daughter-in-law. Veeru and Basanti somehow get captured by Gabbar taken to his hideout. Jai attacks the place and rescues both with dacoit in pursuit.

In the process they exhausted ammunition and concealing injury, Jai forces Veeru to leave for ammunition. Single handedly, Jai fights back and with the last bullet he ignites the dynamite sticks planted on the bridge from close range and gets wounded badly. Veeru returns to the scene and Jai dies in his arms. Then, Veeru attacks Gabbar’s den and catches him and nearly beats him to death when Thakur comes and reminds him of the promise to hand over Gabbar to him. Thakur crushes Gabbar with his spiked sole of his boots. In the meantime, police arrives and arrests Gabbar. Veeru leaves Ramgarh with Basanti and Radha is left alone in the end of the Sholay movie.
