The Black Keys is an American rock twosome formed in 2001 in Akron, Ohio. The group features guitarist and lead vocalist Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney. The duo started as an independent act, self-producing records and recording music in basements before they occasionally turned to one of the most famous rock artists during the 2nd wave of the rival of genre in the 2010s. The raw blues rock sound of the band heavily draws from vocalist Auerbach’s blues influences including Howlin’ Wol, Robert Johnson and Junior Kimbrough. Being friends from their childhood, Carney and Auerbach formed the group after stepping out of college. Drummer Patrick and guitarist Dan Auerbach first met when they were 8 years old. Though they were part of different crowds, they became friends while attending Firestone School. Carney was a social outcast and Auerbach was captain of the high school football team. Recommended by a mutual friend, the duo started jamming together in 1996 as Carney owned a drum set and a 4-track recorder at the time and Auerbach was learning guitar. After completing graduation, they attended the University of Akron before dropping out.
