Alicia Keys Biography and Discography

Born on 25 January, 1981 in New York, Alicia Keys is an American actress, musician, record producer, song-writer and pianist. She is the only child of Craig Cook, a flight attendant, and Teresa Augello a part-time actress. Alicia’s parents split when she was 2 years old. She was sent to dance and music classes by her mother. Keys started playing piano at an early age and learned classical music of composers. She released her first album with J Records, having previously signed record deals with Arista Records and Columbia. Songs in A Minor, Key’s debut album was an instant success selling more than 12 million copies worldwide. She became the best-selling R&B artist and best-selling new artist of 2001. The album helped Keys win 5 Grammy Awards in 2002 including Song of the Year for hit single ‘Fallin’ and Best New Artist. She is the second American artist after Lauryn Hill to win 5 Grammy Awards in 1 night. In 2003 Keys released her second album The Diary of Alicia Keys which was another commercial success selling 8 million copies.

Keys appeared in guest roles on many television series in the next years starting with Charmed. She made her film debut in 2006 in ‘Smokin’ Aces’ which featured Ben Affleck, Taraji P. Henson, Chris Pine, Andy Garcia, Ryan Reynolds and Jeremy Piven. In 2007, she starred in The Nanny Diaries alongside Laura Linney, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evan and Paul Giamitti. In the same year she released her 3rd album, As I Am, which sold 5 million copies worldwide and earned Keys 3 Grammy Awards. In 2008, she starred in The Secret Life of Bees alongside Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning, Sophie Okonedo and Jennifer Hudson. The movie earned her NAACP Image Award nomination.
